World of Work week (WOW) the largest careers fair in the region, attracted a huge number of visitors again this year, when it took place at North Hertfordshire College from 15th - 17th April. Learners and members of the public took the opportunity to meet with a host of employers who attended the careers exhibition.

The event was launched on Monday 14th April at a launch lunch for organisations and companies taking part in the week. Fintan Donohue, Principal of North Hertfordshire College thanked participants for their involvement in what was going to be a highlight in the college calendar for learners. Joe Estrada, founder of the company 'Get Buzzy' was invited to talk about the importance of young people setting goals for the future from as early an age as possible.

Over 1000 people are thought to have visited the event this year in the hope of meeting their future employer and finding the right career for them. This year the event was split between the college's sites in Stevenage and Hitchin.

On Tuesday 15th April the theme for the day was 'Care for your Career' with stands at the Stevenage site for those interested in a career in Health and Social Care, the Voluntary Sector, Childcare, Retail and Construction.

Employers who attended the event included, North Hertfordshire Homes, Young in Herts, Brookers, Friendship Scheme for Mental Health, Hertfordshire Careforce and Lidl.

On Wednesday 16th April ' The Future of You Career' was the theme of the exhibition at the Stevenage centre for those who wanted to find out more about careers in Science, Media and Communication, Business and ICT. Employers who attended the event included, MBDA, the Army, Business Link, Chiltern Radio, Astrium and IBM.

The final day of the event was themed ' Take Hold of Your Career'. Held at the Hitchin centre, visitors were able to find out more about careers in Hair and Beauty, Catering and Hospitality, Art and Design, Sports and Public Services. Employers who were present included LA Fitness, Hertfordshire Constabulary, The East of England Ambulance Service, North Hertfordshire District Council, Royal Air Force, Goldwell and Holiday Inn. Chris Day, goalkeeper for Millwall Football Club, visited the college to speak to learners about his rise to fame and the dedication required to succeed as a professional footballer.

Joe Estrada commented after the event, "North Herts College "WOW" week was "WOW" for me and my company Get Buzzy. I received the feedback I wanted for my venture and think the students at the college have the potential to do amazing things in the future." Heather Sanderson, Employer Engagement Manager at the college said, "The 2008 event was even bigger and better than last year. We had a huge range of local and national employers attending to give visitors an insight into working for their company. A range of top tips were provided from exhibitors to help visitors become a top employee. We hope that the event has provided individuals with the opportunity to see their real potential and introduced them to the world of work.
